Anyone have any tips for this installation? It is a basic cannister type fuel/water separating filter. Current setup has no filter on my I/O and this is a project I wanted to do last year, never got around to it, and the last boating trip of the year we had fuel/water problems so its tops on my list now! Thanks.

yeah, make sure you mount it somewhere for easy access, make sure the arrows point in the right direction and make sure you don't use too long of screws.

Good investment. I agree with sam there on his tips. Also - use good quality marine fuel system clamps (stainless, smooth edges). And use two clamps per fitting per ABYC recommended practice.

If you have to assemble the system and install the threaded barbs into the filter housing, use fuel resistant sealer (either paste or tape) and remember not to apply it to the first two rows of threads so you don't run the risk of the sealant getting into the fuel line.

Use a 10 micron filter cartridge and don't install it too tight.

I added a fuel shutoff valve to my setup as the line into my outboard has no quick release connection (I still need to reroute my wiring harness to get it out of the way.)

Thanks for the quick responses!

As long as its mounted between the tank and the fuel pump there is no specific height from the tank for the mounting spot?

Can I use the typical kind of pipe dope sealant you would use for indoor natural gas lines for this application on the hose fittings?

Also probably goes without saying, although I'll say it, do a careful check for leaks when you first fire up.

Re: Installing fuel/water filter tips

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I am about to install a fuel filter kit this week and had a question.

Is it ok to mount the filter higher than the tank and fuel pump? Where I'd like to mount it, it would be roughly 1.5' higher than my tank and roughly 6" higher than my fuel pump.

Make sure you got ALL,ALL the water out of the tank or you'll just fill it up with water!

Most of the 5.0L I have seen have the water / fuel separator hanging off the starboard exhaust manifold and attached to block which is 10" above the fuel pump and at least a foot above the top of the fuel tank. That is where mine is and that is where it belongs.

My boat did not have one when I bought it. I added one and at first put it in the wrong spot and decided to get it right. It is located exactly where it is suppose to be as stated above.

Thanks for the info!

And I don't have any water in my tank (knock on wood). I'm just adding it for preventative maintenance.
