I got a steal of a deal on 6 ft of keel guard from a marine store that went out of business, I guess they had a giant roll and sold it by the foot. anyway, all of the ones I have seen come with a kit to install. they did not have any of the kits left, just the 6 ft. does anyone know if there is a special primer or something that you put on first? mine just has the glue stuff that is under this red 3m peel off tape on the backside.

The kit that I got didn't have any special cleaners but you do need to get it good and clean. I temp installed it and used masking tape to outline the area. I then used 1800 grit wet/dry to sand the area up real good. Then use isopropyl alcohol to clean it up real good. It stuck and would not un-stick for anything....

Re: installing keel guard

I thnik it depends on the brand....Keel Guard, Keel Sheild, other....

I know when I installed mine, the kit instructed to rough up surface with a nylon brillo pad type thing, clean with alcohol, apply some chemical which unfortunately I don't recall the name of, then peel and stick the guard.

Sorry I can't recall the name of the stuff. I do remember my neighbour advising to wear gloves as he was familiar with it and it was not good for us. Was a clear liquid that came in a tube with sponge applicator on the end of the tube. I got the impression that the stuff sort of "softened" the gel coat for better adhesion.
