I just finished replacing an impeller in my 1984 50 HP Mercury and now trying to install the lower unit to the motor. After several attempts I was able to get it within about 1/2" then it stopped. I assume the splines are not matching up on the driveshaft. I have turned my shift shaft attempting to go from forward to neutral and back. I'm somewhat confused as to why I can not turn the drive shaft even though I can turn the prop. It's now late and I'm tired so I will give it another shot tomorrow. Any help woul dbe appreciated.

Re: Installing Mercury 50 HP lower unit

Grease, grease, grease the heck out of the splines. Never on the top of the splines, just the sides. Shift the gearcase into FWD and the shifter into FWD and rotate the propshaft while wiggling the gearcase up in there to help the splines line up. Throw some silicone spray on the water tube also to help it slide into the pump. Gearcases are evil, but can be overcome with some cussing and persistance.

Good luck

Re: Installing Mercury 50 HP lower unit

Thanks....I think I've now got it back in however I broke off the rubber hose at its base that I think is actually for a speedomoter which I do not have. It was previously just sticking out of the top. Do I need to take the lower unit back off and cap this line? Thanks again...
