The shift cable is supposed to go into one of these two holes. I successfully used the bottom hole and got it to work for a while, but the cable still binds up going into reverse. When I remove the shift cable, the mechanism works freely. I can manually pull and push the shift cable, and it works and moves freely. There is so much pressure, that where the cable is anchored on the control body, it is trying to come off the control body and bending the plastic piece. Any suggestions on how to get this back together correctly?

If you are trying to shift this unit with the cable connected to the engine and the engine not running, you will indeed damage the shifter, cable, and possibly muck up the lower unit. Have someone spin the prop by hand while you move the lever. If it binds up with the cable removed at the engine then there is something else wrong -- wrong cable perhaps.

Thanks, I was trying this with the engine not running, so that may be it--I will try again with the engine running
