I recently bought a 115 inline 6 clynder mariner and put it on my 1995 19 foot center console proline boat. I bought a teleflex tach to install, but can't identfy which is the sending wire (Help!). When I bought the boat last year it had a 120 Force motor which threw a rod last month. I'm sure the force wasn't the orginal motor, but the mariner matched up with the wiring and quicksilver controls.

Re: Installing teleflex tach for 115 mariner

Depending on the year of the motor the tach sending wire is either grey or brown. The brown wire was used on the seventies motors. Grey was used on the newer ones. The source of the tach signal is the voltage regulator or the rectifier, if you do not have a VR. Trace the yellow/red wires from the stator under the flywheel to the rectifer or VR. That is where the grey or brown wire will attach.

it should have a grey wire for tach sender, purple for switched +12V, and black for ground.

I found the rectifier and the gray wire attached to it and used an ohm meter to make sure I had the same wire under the dash. Hooked the ign to purple wire and black to ground, but tach is not working. A light up tester shows power to tach and I ran a jumper wire from the rectifier to the tach and still nothing. any ideas? tach does go to zero when key is turned on.

Do you have the correct pole setting on the back of the tach? I'm not sure what it is but someone here will definately know. I think it is a 12 pole for most above 50HP.

Is there 12 volts on the purple wire when the key is on, and is the black wire truly to engine ground.

If there is, the tach is bad.

hope it helps

Either that or you have a bad rectifier.

Check your battery voltage while the motor is running it should be 14 volts +- at 2000 rpm +. If it isn't you have a bad rectifier.

I agree. I thought I read somewhere that the tach didn't zero on power up. Must have been another thread.

I have the ign wire from the tach connected to the purple wire that come off of the ign switch and branches off to the fuel gauge. I ran a temp wire from the ground to the motor and still got nothing. I ordered a new rectifier on Sunday, should be here by wednesday.

SUCCESS!:D Replaced the rectifier and the tach came to life! I appreciate the help guys. I do have another question. What should the idle rpms be when the boats in the water? It was idling at about 1000 with the garden hose connected.

Took the boat out for a test run today. It's a 1995 19' Proline center console. At wot the motor was turning 5100 rpms at 32mph. Is this good and within guide lines for the motor?
