I have a 1995 Johnson 70hp Johnson and am wanting to install trim guage. It already has the little lever but what else do I need? I think I have found the wiring plug. It is a little black plug on motor. I need to know where to find cheap wiring harness and guage along with what ever else i may need. thanks

DJ, what wire would you run from the sender to the gauge. I just ordered one from the site you gave. I also have the lever ready to go. Just need to know what I will need to wire it up and how. Thanks, 1991 70 HP Rude

Rick,

First off you need to determine if that plug is indeed the sender. Easy to check. Just put an ohmeter on it and sweep the lever on the sender. If the ohm meter moves, that's your plug. Also, turn the key on and see if either lead at the plug is hot.

As I recall, the guage has the following. I'm going from memeory here and it's fuzzy. :D

S Sender

I Ignition (12V hot)

L Light

One wire will go to S, the other to I. I believe you can only hook it up two ways, if it works backwards, you'll know.

Thanks, DJ. Any particular wire gauge or type I should run up to the gauge? Would that "Hot" wire at the plug be the ignition wire to the gauge and the other the sender wire???

Rick,

Yes, that hot wire would be hot with ignition on.

That would be a very low amp circuit (guage).

14-16 guage wire would be fine.

Re: Installing trim guage

Should I be reading any voltage from the sending terminals at the motor plug? I checked the terminals in the plug at the motor with an ohmmeter and all checked out fine(Sweep 1 ohm-90 ohm). Have black and white wire in plug. I assume the black goes to the trim gauge ground and the white is the sender wire??? Open to suggestions and does anyone know where I can get the harness to go from the motor to the gauge, other than OMC dealer?? Or just use wire as DJ suggests? Also, what's the easiest way to tag the ignition wire to the gauge?
