Installing water separator on 3.0 Liter Mercruiser

I would like to install a water separator on my Bayliner 175. (It did not come with one from the factory).

My questions:

Where should the separator be installed in relation to the fuel tank? Should it be higher or lower. My concern is if it is too low, the fuel will drain out of the tank when I go to change the filter. Should I put a shutoff valve between the tank and separator?

Also, are there any special fittings required? Will this type work (with a hose clamp?):

The fuel line in the boat is 3/8"

Thanks

doesn't matter if its higher or lower except....
if it's lower then make sure you have an antisiphon valve as a tank fitting
if it goes higher then you don't need it.
Those fuel barb's will work. Just make sure the fuel/water seperator kit you buy doesn't have them in it already, no sense in buying the same thing twice.

Use perfect seal instead of teflon tape on the threads of the barbs.
and make sure you double clamp all the fuel line ends.

Ayuh,....

As noted by Jason,...
It doesn't matter if it's above or below the tank, there's supposed to be an anti-siphon valve at the tanks outlet....
It'll only leak the little bit of fuel that's in the line....

And,...
Those fittings will work,... IF the filter housing has 1/4" pipe threads....
Many are 3/8" pipe thread.....

The main thing is to mount it Before the fuelpump....

One more note on the hose barb fittings you have linked. I have seen that those style fittings are usually too short to use two hose clamps as required. The style that is smooth with a ridge at the very end is usually longer and will accept two hose clamps.

go 1 size smaller on the clamp if you have to in order to get 2 clamps on.
