Insulating attached garage

The builder (1988) insulted the attic as far as the garage, but no insulation over the garage. The garage ceiling is drywalled (2 layers per code).

I bought some batts to insulate above the garage, but now I notice the vapor barrier also stops at the garage wall.

I'm sure not ripping the drywall down to put vapor barrier in. Can I just fold it up and over the trusses?

Or can I just paint the ceiling with a vapor barrier paint? -that would be easiest

I assume you plan to heat the garage?
If you have access from above, just install it BETWEEN THE TRUSSES with the paper facing down (toward the garage).
Or use unfaced insulation. The painted drywall won't be a perfect vapor barrier but it's better than nothing.

I found some stuff locally called Moorcraft Latex Vapor Barrier Primer Sealer, but haven't heard how well it works.

i wouldnt worry about a vaporbarrier if you have double sheets of drywall up,batts will keep their loft longer than blown in insulation saving $ in the long run,jmo,mike243

Hello,
I am a former drywaller, you must have an vapour barrier over any place that you are going to heat, double layer or not. When the warm air meets cold the condensation will form and then things get wet MOULD grows. not good.

Try using a 2-3lb spray in foam it will insulate and give you a vapour barrier.

Since you have the batts rip down the double layer and staple/tuck tape,up some 4 mil poly.Hanging 5/8 board on the ceiling is a bit tricky.just remember to stagger the joints on both layers. Tape and finish enjoy the new space!

I went with the paint. Jon Eakes has a great page about how these paints are undeservedly ignored, mostly because people don't know how to read the specs. and apply them to local codes.
They work for all sorts of scenarios where its "too late" to install barrier.
I sure wasn't ripping down the drywall.

I would have put barrier and a 3rd layer of drywall before doing that.
