Insurance Claim

Just had a conversation with a marine surveyor regarding my breakdown from the other night.

He mentioned that I may may hydrolocked the engine............I told him that I didn't think so as I was running at ~3500RPM and kinda know that the exhaust would probably push out any water that might exist from a leaking manifold/riser/gasket..........and not enter the engine.

Then he told me that it couldn't be the outdrive because I could shift it in/out of gear............I told him I was familiar with the outdrive and that it could still be the outdrive causing the engine not to turn. If the upper end of the outdrive was the problem I could still shift it in/out of gear............even if the upper gears were welded together.

At that point he said........."seems like you're fairly knowledgeable, will need to evaluate it further when I see it"..............thanks to my iboats education!!!

Still hoping it's the outdrive even if my insurance doesn't cover it.........will keep you guys posted.

No.........

Tony, I'm surprised you didn't use a little of that "Iboats Education" and at least check that out to eliminate the possibility.

On the rare chance that is the problem... your cylinders just spent several days in salt water.

If I hydrolocked at 3500RPM's I'm probably in for a short block (at least).

Re: Insurance Claim

If the drive shat itself, when it locked up the engine you no longer had the benefit of exhaust pressure to keep cylinders free of water intrusion. Presumably when what went south went south you fell off plane and took on a huge stern wave. That could lead to water in the engine even if it's not hydro-locked.:eek::eek:

I have new exhaust flappers..........this should not be a problem.

Re: Insurance Claim

Is it a Merc? Pull the top cover on the outdrive & have a look in there. If you're low on oil and/or the upper bearings are welded together, it will be quite evident.

It's a Merc...........plan on doing just that after I pull the boat out of the water.............the remote resevoir is full, should not be low on fluid.
