While salmon fishing in wa. state I hit something under the water With my 150 merc black max. The engine over rev. Had enough power to make it back to my trailer. But when tried to restart on trailer engine was siezed. Is this possible to any ones understanding, that it could not have taken out my powerhead. Insurance denied thank you. Toot

Over-revving can cause powerhead failure. Obviously the engine failed because you hit something.

What type of insurance did you have? If they don't cover something like that, what good is it?

How did it over rev? Did the engine come out of the water, or lose a blade on your prop or what? You need to go to your local dealer and explain what happened! If they say it is because of you hitting something you need to have them contact your insurance company and have them tell them why that was the cause! I have been involved with the auto insurance adjusters long enough to know that the first thing they say is "NO"!! Unfortunatly you have to fight for every dime you get! How do you think they are so profitable! Sorry to here about your trouble!

LubeDude

Re: insurance deied

I had standard boat insurance, which should have coverd this 7000$ claim than they went running the other way [progressive insurance]. They had an independint party out of seattle come and look at what was left of my engine after they had it torn down . But they have never given me the findings just said it was general wear and tare. Though other mechanics have said it is possible to over rev. and blow. { yes when engine hit it did come out of the water slightly. Hit hard enough to come out of the hydraulic lift . Thanks all Toot

mike toutloff,

A "seize" is NOT general wear and tear.

They're going to fight you on this one basing their claim that you seized it by continuing to run it.

Fight back by saying that your next point of landfall was Japan.

Like I said, you need a written statement or a call from your dealer, If still no, you need a letter from an atorny! You do have a claim, do NOT let them get away with it!!

LubeDude

As an insurance guy (not your company), I think you're getting screwed. Any decent mechanic can tell the difference between normal wear & tear and extreme rpm damage caused by a sudden accident...and I'm assuming you didn't continue to over-run the engine.
First, you might try going to your agent: s/he is making a commission on your business to help you in cases like this. Otherwise, sadly, you may need legal help, but in this case, it's worth it. That's too much money for you to cave.
