I own a 1981 9.9hp that I was in the process of replacing the impeller when I noticed some of the lower unit has rotted. Its on the intake side of the the impeller towards the rear of the engine...where the shift rod runs. Take a look at the pictures...short of buying a new lower unit, any fixes? has anyone seen this before? I figure maybe some good marine grade sealent would work. Any recomendations on what to use? Thanks.

Wow, great info!!! Well, from what it looks like, I might not need a repair at all. It seems, like you say, that opening is supposed to be there (he even mentions it might look like corrosion. Cool. Thanks again!

You need the repair, but for just one end next to the shift rod housing. The hole above the water intake is OK. If you don't seal the other one, you will not have a reliable water supply.
