Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between an automotive and a marine intake gasket for a 87 Merc 260hp?

Elite... I doubt you have much saltwater in Nebraska. Gaskets are not as critical in freshwater IMHO.

Freshwater cooled - coolant is coolant, it incorporates rust inhibitors.

Raw water cooled - Salt or fresh water doesn't matter, no rust or corrosion inhibitors although salt water is far more corrosive.

Aldo

Ditto Bondo
I use Fel-pro from local auto parts store. I also have had a motor apart after years of use and found no problem with gaskets. All were raw water cooled.

Re: Intake gasket

If the engine is raw water cooled, the only marine gasket needed would be the head gasket.
