Was wondering if the carbs are interchangeable from a '53 to a '64 Johnson. Need to eliminate this as possible problem....

Both motors are three h.p.

Thanks

It should work fine, just as long as it physically fits, which it should. They're both from the same series.
Personally, I would just rebuild the carburator anyway.

EDIT: Common problems with 3/4hp Johnny-Rudes:
Ignition coils cracked - all sorts of wierd idle or sometimes full speed problems, since they arc over at different speeds. Maddeningly, they usually don't arc over at pull start speeds. Fortunetly, new ones are cheap. (<$20 each)
Clogged fuel filter - Surprise! It's above the brass 'nut' where the fuel line hooks to the fuel tank. This type of filter clogs easily on old gas.

Good luck!

I think the only difference is the 53 carb will have a high speed needle valve, the 64 has a fixed jet. Which carb is going where? A 53 would have a hole in the shroud for the needle valve, the 64 won't.
