Unfortunately no, it had an inline 6 on the other boat, 165 HP. So that would make it not doable? Is it the gear ratio that would be different?

I can't tell for sure, but the 140 drive looks like a 400 (like Bondo said) and the one from the 165 looks like a Electric Shift. If so, those won't swap for sure.

the one that i have that's toast is an electric shift, and the one from the 165 is also electric shift. What do i need to know for sure? the model number off the other leg? i can ask the guy to get it for me if so.

Best guess is nope you can't swap 'em. Lower gear ratios are the same, but the upper is different. One of the other guys will have to chime in for sure ... I'm not quite certain.

Re: Interchanging OMC sterndrives

Well i actually managed to track down someone who's been working on OMC here for years, and he is telling me that no problem as long as the electric shift is the same, and the power tilt is there on the leg. He said the gearing is different, but not very much until you get into the bigger 8 cylinder engines. He also said that i won't probably notice a difference at all, so now i just don't know what to think...

If the gearing is different between the original 4cylinder and the 6cylinder then I bet a prop change would be next to keep the RPM's up.

Would you have to buy the other sterndrive, or do you already have it? Based on that and what Maclin said, I'd be tempted to put it on and try it out. If you can get your hands on it cheap enough, there's a heck of a good chance that you can get your money back selling it if it doesn't work.

Re: Interchanging OMC sterndrives

i'd have to buy it... it's on another boat. He's asking $750 for the boat which is a good deal for a whole leg. That's why i'm trying to figure it out in advance, it's going to be a huge pain to go through it all if it's not right. So where was that OMC dealership number to call....LOL
