Interconnectivity - 18hp & 25hp 1971 E'rudes.

I have a broken 25hp '71 Evinrude, the top seal and bearings need replacing. I have been quoted $600 for this work, as you would expect I'm reluctant to spend so much on such an old motor. A mate at work has offered to give me an 18hp (same year) with problems in the lower unit. Are they compatable and where do you recommend the best place to 'graft' the two ends together would be.<br /><br />Thanks<br />Mark

They should swap no problem. There's very little difference between the two engines.<br /><br />Probably it would be easiest to put your lower unit on his complete engine. But if your midsection, etc, is in good shape then swap the powerheads. Easy task either way.<br /><br />$600 seems pretty extreme for the work - but I can't the damage from here. Still sounds like a PFO bid to me...
