30 HP Mariner, 1982. Cooling flow problems so pulled LU and found impeller shot. The plate and cartridge insert showing some scuffing so I decided to get the complete kit while I still can. Pulled the insert out of the water pump housing and saw a little knurl of "stuff" near the water outlet (see photo). At first I thought it was plastic melted from the water pump housing. On closer inspection, it looks more like some sort of adhesive used to hold the cartridge insert into the water pump housing. Don't know if it impedes cooling water flow, but, can't help. I'll be interested in tell-tale flow and cooling with new parts.

My manual says the cartridge should be coated with "Perfect Seal" before inserting into pump housing. I can't believe "Perfect Seal" is as hard and inflexible as what's in the old housing. I plan to use Napa Aviation Gasket Sealer when installing the new parts.

Melted plastic or squeezed out adhesive - I'm replacing it with a new one (I will keep the old one for a backup and trim that stuff off).

Once again this is proof that there are still many folks who think it is OK to run an outboard without cooling water to the pump.--------The motor will not overheat in 15 seconds but the water pump is damaged !!
