Last night after changing the impeller on a 2000 7.4L Volvo, I was noticing there was quite a temperature difference between the port and starboard riser just using my hand at idle speeds.

I didn't believe there was a restriction causing this since the boat is exclusively used in fresh water. I got out my non contact temperature meter and found that the difference in temperature of the risers directly matches the difference in temperature of the water leaving the thermostat housing. The difference was close to 20 degrees. 95 degrees for the starboard and 115 for the port. The temperature of the risers was 103 for starboard and 123 for port( engine at idle).

It looks like the thermostat housing design is the culprit. The water that needs to go to the port manifold/riser passes over the outlet of the thermostat and gets heated up by that water on its way out to the outlet.

This seem like a logical explanation?
