Interesting thought on CC marine stereo mounting

Has anyone used a goose neck set up, to mount their radio head unit inside the console? It would require some bracketing, to keep the mechanical pressure on the head end's frame. It would also require careful wiring & tie wrapping. With all the movement, this could get messy.

I have a large access door (in the cockpit area), into the console (about knee height) where the front of the head end would peer out (so to speak).

It's an 18' CC. Between the vertical rod holders, the fire extingusher, grab rails, GPS/VHF and seat cushion (back), up front, there is virtually no real estate left to mount my head unit.

My thoughts were several:
1) I am using a remote control up to the dashboard, so I don't require constant access to the buttons.
2) The goose neck could offer isolation from the bumpy ride of the boat.
3) I can still move the head unit out of the way, to get access to all the other assorted farkles I keep in the console.
4) The head unit will stay dry(er) inside the console

Just want to get other's thoughts on this.

That sounds like it will work to me. Although I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to as a "gooseneck". if it's a gimble mount stereo housing, I've done something similiar that works great. I screwed the footings of the housing to small wooden blocks and then marinetex'd the blocks to the ceiling of the console. It works great and I didn't have to drill any holes in my console. The wiring is easy to deal with also. just run all of the wires through some split-flex conduit and attached the conduit somewhere out of the way.

Yeah, that's way different than what I thought you were referring to. I don't have any experience with that, but just looking at it I think it looks pretty questionable. I'm picturing your stereo bouncing up and down on the end of that thing as you pound over the surf. If it works though I'ld love to hear about it...

I was not thinking of that as well. I think you would find your head unit on the ground after a few good bumps.

When you were describing it, I was thinking about mounting the head in the cubby, with a remote to the outside dash. I never use the CD any more. If I did not already have a 2 " x 8" hole cut out of my dash, I would likely do it.

What I want for a stero now is one that I can put a 16GB SD memory card in it, and play music. No skips, no scratched CD's, no wet or dropped IPODS.

Well, I've had a change in my thoughts based on your input.

Instead of mounting "said" gooseneck to the bottom of the console floor (inside), what if I hung it down instead? Just a couple of stainless screws through the console top into the mount holes on the gooseneck.

I was thinking of using the Poly Planar (RM-10) box to enclose it & braket the top to the hanging gooseneck.

I think that no matter what, any stereo is going to get beat up & down, I'm just trying to preserve the storage room inside the console. Having the stereo swing out & swing back seems like a favorable option (if I can make it work(?))

Yeah, I'll have a 2" round hole for the remote, up by the controls....but all the wiring can be tie wrapped back along the gooseneck.

Just thinking...what are your thoughts?

be interesting to see if it works. My one concern, will the gooseneck hold it where you want it too in the bumps and turns of a boat.

but even if my concern is true, the only problem would be it would keep working itself down, and you would have to go get it.

let us know how it goes.

Hate to be negative but this will never work.
