Has anyone used interlux perfection directly over a self etching primer
such as zinc chromate? The interlux site suggests stripping to bare aluminum
then sanding or I should say grinding with 36 grit pads. There'so way I'm
doing that to my hull. I'm having to strip down the sides of the boat but most of the bottom is the original paint that I'd rather just scuff and paint
over after priming the bare spots.

Has anyone had good results using perfection over ZC or another etching
primer?

they sell their own primers. i stripped and painted a tower with perfection, looking great after a year. have you read the instrux at yachtpaint.com? they are VERY specific. you can call and ask them questions too but they won't advise you to do anything off-label, against the instructions, or talk about any other products or materials...to paraphrase, they won't speculate about how their products might work under any circumstances other than those it was made and tested for.

One of the reasons its a gamble using perfection over an off-brand primer is because of the solvents in the paint. Perfection has very strong solvents in it. You run the risk of the paint coming off over time with the wrong primer.
But if you don?t mind possibly having to do it over, give it a try. It might just work. Perfection will bond with just about anything.
