Intermediate housing noise on a OMC 800??

I've just developed this strange noise between idle and 1000rpm that I've been able to pinpoint to the intermediate housing on my 83 stringer 800. After that, it runs and sound great. Also, the engine has always had a shake between the same RPM (due to bad compression on one cyliner I believe). I just had the outdrive done 30hrs ago, with a new ball gear on it, but retained the old one on the intermediate, as it was still in good shape, with just a little wear, although lately the engine has been accidently started a few times with the drive up. Could there be a reason for this causing the noise, as that's when this seem to start shortly after. A mechanic told me on the weekend that there are a couple of bearings in the intermediate housing, but that they're rarely a problem.
thanks for any info or advice on this one:)

Your mechanic is right about the intermediate bearings. What's the oil look like?? Have you checked the level??

Ball gears should be replaced in pairs. They could be the source of the noise because they are unequally worn.

You can isolate it further by pulling the Sterndrive off (You really should, since you gotta replace the transom seal) and then starting the engine. If you have a problem developing in the intermediate, the noise will still be there.

You've been reading:)thanks for the excellent advice on "both" my posts!!

I have the other ball gear, but didn't really want to tackle that if it wasn't needed. I guess I'll find out when I "remove" the outdrive AGAIN, and give a listen. I haven't had a chance today yet to check the oil, but will and update.
