I have a 1989 Bayliner Capri 19ft I/O with a Ford 5.0L and OMC Cobra. I recently purchased this boat after it sat up for a while. After a few hours, I got the motor to run and it sounds perfect. The issue I am having is this: I placed the rear of the boat into the water and lowered the outboard unit to the fullest. The motor started right up and I was waiting for it to warm up to temp so I can verify everything is in check. After the motor reached temp, it began making an intermediate knocking noise around the bellhousing area. The noise comes and goes every minute or so. Keep in mind, I did not put the unit into gear yet. All of this happened while still in neutral. Any ideas what this noise could be?

Might want to pull the outdrive and check the gimbal bearing and ujoints for any roughness.

I'd guess Don's diagnosis is most likely the cause.
It may be possible your shifter mechanism is not adjusted properly; even if the shifter is in neutral the gears may be trying to engage and the teeth are hitting each other slightly.

Re: Intermediate Noise in Bellhousing OMC Cobra

Thanks for the info. I've looked at the outboard unit and upon inspection, its in shambles internally. Thanks again for your help.
