Hi,

My outdrive is very difficult to get into gear. Upon inspection I noticed that the itermediate shift shaft is bearly seated in the shift shaft on the bell houseing. I have read in the forums that the intermediate shift shaft is held at the approriate height by a washer on the lower shift shaft. When I review the parts diagram i see a cotter pin and washer. If these were missing from the intermediate shaft would it fall a little lower?? If that is the case I think inserting a cotter pin should do the job.

Thanks

Thanks,

Just to clarify. What is the purpose of the cotter pin. Is it there to keep the shaft up. I would rather replace the cotter pin that remove the lower unit to replace the washer.

The cotter pin has nothing to do with holding the shift shaft up, that is what the washer does. The cotter pin holds a different washer in place and prevents the shift shaft from coming out of the hole.

You would have to remove the lower to access the cotter pin too.

I understand now. I was hoping that the washer and cotter pin were on the bell houseing side and i could gain acess from outside.
