This past weekend I had a problem with my engine...factory rebuilt Volvo AQ130C (4 cyl) with 150 hours on it... while we were out cruising on the California Delta. We had cruised about 50 miles according to my GPS...a combination of high/medium speed (25-30 mph) in wide open areas and slow going (~1400 rpm) in the many 5 mph "slow zone" areas we came across. While speeding up after going thru a slow zone about 1/3 mile long, the engine suddenly cuts out and dies. I try to restart and it's not starting. I checked to be sure the dual, single barrel carbs were getting gas, and I also checked for spark...all looks good. I figure for some reason, the engine is flooded, so I just let her sit for about 5 minutes and try to start again. I crank the engine and pump the throttle at the same time...it wants to start while the throttle is wide open. It starts and I imemdiately back off on the throttle but it dies. I repeat this a couple times and finally it stays started after slowly backing off the throttle from about 2000 rpm down to idle speed (1000 rpm). We then cruise without issues for quite a few miles and come to another slow zone, where this time the engine cuts out while we are going slow. Again, it would not start unless we let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, and again, once started we cruised just fine afterwards and it was fine the entire way back to the launch ramp where we began our 60 mile journey.

This same thing happened last summer, and the engine would die while slowing down after a cruise, and I never did figure out what the problem was nor did I do anything to try and fix it, but this is the first time it has happened this season in which we have accumulated over 30 hours of completely trouble free boating.

I am thinking that perhaps a float in one of the carbs is sticking or there is some other problem in at least one of the carbs.

Any other ideas or theories?

Thanks!
