i have a 97 merc 90 hp. 3 cyl. recently rebuilt?( 1 yr. ago)
good compression
symptons:

motor runs good for about 5-6 miles then it looses power. after the machine looses power it does not respond to changes in throttle input and looses any type of punch it has to plane off. motor sounds different also.
basically you can go wot and it planes of very slowly and never reaches high rpms.

it will loose power if i run it at half throttle or full. therefore i dont think its temp related. (its peeing fine and has new water pump)

occasionaly if i keep running when power goes down it jumps back on power for a few seconds. but the motor does not fully recover untill it sits for a day or half day.

when i tap the key choke while running it also has a power surge.
if i squeeze the fuel line ball there is no change.

replaced fuel filter and fuel linesinside the motor.

checked fuel pump and it looked to be in good shape.

hooked up a different gas tank with no change in problem.

can a fuel pump be bad and appear to be good with visual inspection?

can it be electrical?

You appear to be dropping a cylinder. Usually this is most likely from an ignition/spark problem, but since it picks up a little when you choke it I would also investigate a gummy carb. Try to isolate which cylinder by unplugging the spark plugs one at a time and running it. The one that makes the least differenc when unplugged is the culprit. My guess is you are going to need a carb rebuild.
