Intermittent Spark to top spark plug

My 1984 40 hp Evinrude motor has been running on one cylinder intermittently and will randomly fire the other spark plug after 10-15 minutes. At first I thought the motor was getting flooded and saturating the spark plug so it wouldn’t fire. Today I tested both spark plugs, the bottom one fired and the top one did not. This leads me to believe the starter coil need to be replaced but I swapped the bottom starter coil with the top and I still couldn’t get any spark to the top spark plug. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Does your engine have CDI units ?
If so goto the CDI website they have a fault finding walk through. That will guide you to the fault if its electrical

There's always a possibility that the pin/socket connections within those rubber electrical connectors of the timer base to the powerpack etc have backed out somewhat resulting in a poor connection. They also have a habit of having the wire breaking away from the pin/socket... BUT... having the wire remain in the rubber connector by pure friction... worth checking.

If all is as it should be in the above mentioned areas... I would agree with "racerone" that the powerpack requires replacing.

I replaced the power pack and problem solved!!! I’ll keep everyone updated though if for some reason it stops working.
