1979 115 HP Johnson V4 Sea Horse. Once I get it warmed up it runs like a spotted tailed ape. When I get to my destination and want to leave, it acts like the battery is dead and wants to barely turn the motor over. I have ruled out battery. This winter, I drimeled the battery leads and on this last trip found one that broke because of metal fatigue from the Drimel. I have replaced battery leads.
Can you guys think on anything else like a rectifier or capicator or power pack that could be causing this problem?

Re: Intermittent Starting Issue

The battery may still be an issue. Have you had it load tested? Are you sure the charging system is working. If you have a voltmeter on the dash does it show 13V or higher at anything above 1500 RPM? A starter solenoid going bad could be an issue. You would need a handheld voltmeter (multi-tester) to test it. When the engine acts up, have someone turn the key to start while you measure the voltage at the large terminal on the solenoid that feeds the starter. If it shows less than 11 volts either the solenoid is bad, the battery is bad/weak, or the cables are still an issue, or the starter itself may be in need of rebuilding/replacement.
