Intermittent Tach?

Drove my bass boat thru some pretty rough stuff on Friday and I noticed the tach was working intermittently. Motor ran fine, but the tach needle would drop to zero the jump back up to the running RPM. Checked for a loose wire behind the gauge but everything was tight. What/where do I need to check next? Motor is 97 Yamaha 175hp Pro-V. Tach is made for Skeeter by Fiara.
