Ok, first HI THERE!!!! I'm new here, obviously, but this seems to be the place to be when it comes to boating.

Ok,

For my first topic...

Evinrude Outboard 55HP Outboard

Internal engine harness is toast from dryrot. Removed it, found replacement all over the net, out of stock for the resonably priced ones, and well, I have another much simpler and cost effective way to replace this harness.

By using a male to female new harness, I want to cut out the old male and female ends, do away with them, and rewire the new harness in place of the old one and extend to the connections.

I have done this many times in 12V automotive installs, so why can't I do it on this application.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated on this as I am excited to meet and get to know you great folks!

i have done it when the wires at the big plug were bad. trim and splice with bullet connectors. you can try these for a harness.

I have replaced plenty of wires in my motor, no reason not to.

Sounds like you have a good electrical back ground so it shouldn't be a problem.

I use the sheathed connectors and then black tape them to be sure nothing is going to vibrate loose.

Thanks a bunch for the input, I thought this wouldn't be an issue, but I just wanted to get some back-up knowledge there. Im shifting my knowledge of working on cars for years to my boat, and will be starting a project thread in the right place. Looking forward to sharing my experiences as I go along with the rebuild.

Thanks again!!

The only issue with that is if you sell the motor the prospective buyer will walk away because the new connector will not mate with his boat-side harness. And if for some reason your engine goes to outboard heaven and you have to replace it, you now have the same problem. Any salvage yard would cut off a connector for a reasonable price. You would then splice the new wires and connect the other end to the engine so you now have things as they were.

I also thought of that scenerio. Luckily, the motor has all of it's original controls and steering still mounted, including the console, lol and I'm looking for maybe a years use out of it. I've checked the local yards and well, they are "lame" to say the least as far as parts and their pricing in my area is again, way overpriced for used equpment as I suspected from many visits to the local yards. Once i get my little bit of use out of it, It will re scraped for parts and recycling. :)
