Having a problem with my alternator (motor is a 72 Chrysler 360ci). The alt I use (came with the boat) now has a external regulator. Can I replace with a internal regulator and do away with the little black box and save a lot of money (don't no why but the alternators with external regs are a lot more money) ?

Re: Internal regulator or not????

YES, you should be able to go with a Typical GM Internal regulator Alternator. Now I am not sure about Automotive to Marine as far as Sealing the Alternator and Spark arrestors, But If you can get a Typical GM alternator you will have 3 wires to hook up. The Main battery Wire, heavey Guage wire in the back of Both alternators will be the same. The other 2 are terminal Block wires ( Little white terminal Block ) The Bigger of the 2 wires ( red usually ) Goes to Ignition Positive ( Run Position on key switch, power when the key is ON ) The smaller wire is for the Idiot Light Circuit. You may not have one on the Marine application. If you dont, Dont worry about hooking the wire up ( Typical brown wire ) GM alternators also Come various amp outputs so try and Match one up to the oone coming off close as possible. Obviously you will need to match or swap the Pulleys, and One more thing is to match the Mounting Lugs which my require whats called " Clocking " an alternator. That means Unbolting the alternator and spinning the Housing untill it matches the one coming off.

Hope this helps
GM Internal Alternators are really easy and simple...Good thinking

john
