I am surprised with the internet speed that I am getting. I have Comcast cable internet and recently was having a problem with the service. The connection was going in and out several times through out the day. The techs came out and eventually had to run a new wire through my front yard and over the street to pole. So now i have one splitter on the line and thats it. Im now getting almost 30Mbps down! And like about 2-4 up. That is BLAZING fast! I am useing this site to test the bandwidth, http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ . It is close to the same with which ever one i choose even if it is far away from me. I just hope that these speeds keep up. I was getting around 10-12 Mbps down before and that is really what I pay for. Im not going to complain though!

Re: Internet speed test

Depending on how you look at it the readings you are getting are misleading.

I have Comcast and run the same test with the same amazing results. Then I have done some large downloads and the speed goes to 6-8Mb/s instead of the 30Mb/s tested.

Now to be clear the service is only rated at 6Mb/s so I have nothing to complain about.

I am not sure what is going on. I have noticed the following:

1. When doing downloads and monitoring the speed in task manager I see a peak at first then it drops to 6Mb/s. It looks like Comcast is letting you burst at high speed to get pages but if it is a big file you are limited.

2. I have done FTP downloads from a known good server that is close to me. On it I can only get the 6Mb/s speed, and not even the burst at that beginning.

3. When trying other speed test sites I never see the same high speed as I do from the site you mention. Task manager verifies that I am getting the high speed as indicated BTW.

Not sure what is really happening but it is confusing. I am sure of one thing though - the high speed results are not real. When trying other sites I never get that speed, even from known high speed local sites.

Re: Internet speed test

My service is rated for 20 Mbps down and 4 Mbps up in my area. I get that when downloading large files. I used to get lower results buy i downloaded a 600 Meg file from microsoft the other day and it BUSTED along at 32 MBPS!!! Im not complaining. If i pay for a movie and download it from one of the sites that sells them legally i get close to the same results now. Before i did not get the same speeds! I used to pay for 12 Mbps but they included this "power boost" service that i upgraded to and since then is when i have been getting these speeds. Its not misleading i can download from cnet at those speeds as well. Like i said I am not going to say Boo about it to them!

Re: Internet speed test

Glad that you are getting that speed and that you have verified it with an actual download.

My comments were aimed at saying you need to test that speed with independent testing like downloading a big file as you did.

Speed is not a simple measurement due to what the ISP can do. Google Comcast and BitTorrent and you siee Comcast got in trouble for limiting speed between its customers and BitTorrent.

Again - great to hear that you really are getting that speed

i think that they took the limiter off or something on accident. I know that they limit your speed from their home office. When i upgraded my internet speed they did it over the phone. It was instant. I just had to restart my modem. I think im getting business class codeing.

Technically you divide by 1024 to get Mb/s but if you divide by 1000 that is close enough.

You have about 1.2Mb/s. Not great but if you have DSL that is about all you can expect.

Distance becomes a big factor with the higher speeds. Try going to someplace far away and you will see a real speed drop.

Re: Internet speed test

I got a email last week after i noticed the speed that they were testing a 20 mbps system in my area and wanted to know if i could send them results. That explains a lot of the speed!! Now today i saw a comcast commertial that said speeds up to 20 Mbps. So now i know whats up.
