Is your shift interruptor switch suppose to activate on land or only when in the water when it has a load on it?

Do you have a shift control cable behind the control box or just wires? You may have a type of electric activated shift system.
Post a pic of it

The shift interrupt switch - cutout switch - only opens when you shift out of gear with the propeller in water. It may twitch a bit when you're shifting out of gear on muffs, but it's unnoticeable.

The slight delay will be much more noticed (hopefully) in the water under load. If your tack's RPMs don't drop for an instant and climb back, you have bad switch OR linkage is worn and not within needed specs. Trust me!
