hi all, i have been lurking here for about a week now, and thought i would join to hopefully get some help with my problem.
first off i will introduce myself, my real name is chris and i have a 1977 Fiberform (model unknown) with a mercruiser 470 170hp I/O.

now on to the problem, i have tried searching for this to no avail.
my trim system seems to have a problem getting stuck in the up position and not wanting to go down.
when i first got the boat the prop was up and i lowered while stored per the previous owner, when i went to use it for the first time it went up just fine but wouldnt go back down at all. i checked the fluid and added some as it needed it and that didnt help, i called the previous owner and he said i would have to hold the "in" button for quite some time before the pump would work after being low, he also said i would need the boat to be level, so i leveled it and heard the pump start to gurgle like it was trying to get fluid but couldnt quite get it, so i rocked the boat side to side a bit and it went. woo hoo!

so i got it in the water and up and down both worked great. on the way back to the dock i managed to hit some high rocks in the lake and destroyed the prop, and in a panic raised the prop all the way up, and now its stuck again, i have checked the lines and they are ok, i have checked the fluid and it is ok, and i tried to run the pump at level and rock it a bit and no luck.

so does anyone have any idea what could be going on?

sorry for the mini-novel, i thought it best to tell the whole story not just the problem.
thanks in advance.

Re: Intro/ Question

disconnect the trim from the outdrive and see if both are moving or only one. One may have an issue and is fighting the other.

Have a look at the attached chart from the ADULTS ONLY sticky at the beginning of this forum which is chocked full of great useful info:
as you can see on the chart, you should have a MC-1 back there

You can click on the pic 3-times to enlarge it.

Re: Intro/ Question

update:
apparently the half a quart i added the first time around wasnt enough, the reservoir took the other half of the fluid and now it works great!
thanks for the info eric.
how much fluid should the system hold anyways
