iPhone 4 to Samsung Galaxy

Hello All,

I'm up for a new phone through Verizon.

I currently have an iPhone 4. It's been through a lot. Including a thorough "swim". Still works fine. Four years now.

Anyway, I am looking at phones with a larger screen than the iPhone 5. Mrs. Fleetwin has a five and it's still too small, for me.

The Galaxy has caught my fancy.

Questions:

1. I have a lot of data on my iPhone. As a matter of fact, the 32G I have is maxed. Mostly books and pictures.

Will those transfer OK?

2. What is the learning curve from the two?

3. Do I have to completely change my software to continue my book club, etc.

4. Battery life experience?

Thanks.

Re: iPhone 4 to Samsung Galaxy

Good thread. I've got the 64 gig Iphone 4s and the top model of Ipad with cell package all given to me by my work. I think the way to ensure someone bashes and loathes apple products is to give them a bunch of them and expect actual business to be performed on the devices. I'm due to make the switch as well soon and wouldn't take a truck load of apple products for free having had them for a couple years. Great for entertainment purposes but not for running a 700 million dollar business. My wife has had three Android based phones and the learning curve is very quick.

Re: iPhone 4 to Samsung Galaxy

I just switched from a 32G Iphone 4 to a Google Nexus 5. I picked 16G since I wasn't using half of the iphone 4 memory. I had already bought an Android tablet 6 months ago so the learning curve was faster for me. Once Apple comes out with a bigger screen for the phone, I will likely switch back to Apple. The operating system is better.

There are some things I like better on the iPhone and some things I like better on Android.

One thing I really like about my Nexus is the wireless charging. The Samsung does not have it. I have a charging pad at work and at home and just sit the phone on it and it charges.

I have my Google Nexus on Straight Talk so its only $45/month and the phone was $350 but there is no contract. Since you are on Verizon, you can't get the Nexus however.

As far as running a 700 million dollar business and what phones you should use, the company I work for is a lot bigger than that and the only phones that are supplied are iPhones. Also, the apps that run on tablets are all running on iPads. Our company is a high tech company. Maybe that's the difference. :)

I am not sure how "good a thread" this is, but you seem to have totally missed the point.
OP posed 4 questions, and instead of answering any, you've essentially told us that "Apple sucks".
If you read the relevant instruction manuals for your Apple Products with the same "attention to detail" as you read the post, as they say in Newfoundland, "Skipper, I think I sees yer problem"....
It's not a hardware or software issue....it's what they affectionately call in the CS world a "liveware problem". :D

What software do you use for books? If it's Kindle, not an issue.

All your photos will transfer fine.

Music will be harder if you bought it off iTunes but there are solutions for that as well.

Battery life of your current iPhone 4 is probably not as good as it was when you first got it. It's very easy to change by the way.

Re: iPhone 4 to Samsung Galaxy

All,

Thanks for the input.

1. Books are from: Audible. They are on my laptop and in their system library. So, I should be able to download-I am thinking. I may have to change formats. Agreed?
2. Pictures: understood. Those should be easy.
3. Music is from : iTunes. Uh oh????

Thanks again, for the tips. Keep them coming.

I have no complaints with Apple or their products. I just want a bigger screen. If they offered it, I'd go for it.

There is an Audible Android app.

Do a search on "converting iTunes music to mp3" so you can use them on your Android device.

I really like Apple products and the whole ecosystem. I agree, once there is a bigger iPhone, I may switch back.

Ha ha, no it doesn't suck for entertainment and the devices work great built into the walls to control my house. It's the business use aspect where they fall short. I will go ahead and ignore in the future when you stray off of topic a degree or two especially given the fantastic additional info your reply has provided. It seems we are in the same boat here.

Since we are talking about phones here, would love to hear how they don't meet your business needs.

I love Samsung products and android phones, although mine died when I went swimming with it. Love the very large screen and I don't find the phone annoyingly large.

It's funny, my admin assistant who is a 30 something still in college got an IPAD as part of her tuition. She just stopped by my office yesterday and was complaining how ineffective the Ipad is for textbooks and the various related functions as she is settling into the ipad.

As for business, wow, there are so many things that impede business when on the road. For starters, it refuses to open any sort of encrypted email off of any system. It won't open most PDF's even though I have the PDF app. I can't save a document on the Ipad. Say for example I receive a document or spreadsheet or similar in an email...I want to be able to open it, modify it, save it to the ipad then attach it from the ipad to a new email....that most simple of all things isn't possible. Little things that have been staples of work since windows came out just aren't available. I can not access my company network via the ipad either as you could with a laptop so I end up keeping my documents and things in email and never cleaning my email out. When I want to send a document I received in an email, I am forced to forward the original email, erase everything from the email including the FW in the subject and make it my own email. I am pretty much past the need to really use Excel at this point but even with the $ office app, it is pretty bad. It is such a monumental pain when you have things to do on the road and there is a lot of $ at stake.

Having moved from Blackberry a couple years ago, the Apple products were like a horse versus a car in functionality so dealt with the problems but when deadlines matter...it just takes too much time and there are too many limitations.

Most of the things you mention are the same on an Android tablet. Personally, I use Dropbox for all my documents so it doesn't matter what medium I use. Everyone at my work uses some sort of cloud storage for documents but then again, I work for a tech company so you guys might be behind the times anyway.

If I am on the road, using a tablet for documents like Excel is monumentally stupid. That's what laptops are for. Just because all you have is a hammer doesn't mean everything is a nail.

I still want to know how iphones vs android phones negatively affect how you do business. I just switched from the iphone to an Android and my biggest pet peeve about the Android phone is the mail app.

If you sat next to me while I was on the road attempting to get work done, we would throughout the day come up with a list of things that took so much time to work around that I got 3 things done instead of the 10 things I needed to get done. I'm in a sales type role whereby I manage my own book of business. My book consists of $700,000,000 worth of sales I have personally produced...the fantastic amount of stress and low tolerance for BS that goes along with that is large. There are competitors that do what I do always nipping at my heals. A PDF for example that opened yesterday that absolutely refuses to open today is extraordinarily frustrating. So back to drop box...I have it and help me understand this. When I get a document via email, there is no option that you can click on that says 'save to drop box'. Alternatively, there is no way that I can seem to attach a document to an email from drop box. In addition, when there is no cell coverage or wifi (which is a lot less now that devices don't need to be shut down on planes and with GOGO internet) you can't use drop box.

As for the Android Phone app my wife has struggled with the app as well. For unknown reasons it just stopped working for two of her email accounts at different intervals making her have to use other of the free email apps to access her emails.

Thanks. I'd "heard" about battery life issues. But, you're right, some ap's seem to drain more than others. I was also told to keep ap's closed unless you are actively using them. That seems to help, as I am told. Agree?

Size is no issue as far as what I see. It will still fit in a shirt/sport coat pocket, from what I've experienced. I also have a waterproof "bag" that will still work. A tight squeeze but it will go in there.

My B'day is coming up so I think I'm going to pull the trigger. I'm sure there will be a learning curve but there was too, with the iPhone.

Finally, my business is finally migrating from Blackberry's to iPhone 5's. I don't think they would do that unless they have figured out email, access issues.

Thanks again-all!

The iphone is no different than Android. You first click on the attachment in the email and open the file in a PDF reader. Then there is an option to store to drop box. Not much different than Android.

To send a file, you just go to the dropbox app, open the document and email it.

I suggest talking to your IT department and have them help you or maybe one of your kids can help you.

Re: iPhone 4 to Samsung Galaxy

I have gone back and forth between the two. There are good and bad. The one thing I hate about apple is you get locked in to their media pretty easy (books, mp3,anything via the itunes store) One thing I like about apple is it just works when I plug it in to my car/home radio etc. One thing I love about my Galaxy is that its open and I can buy media from anyplace and it will work with any device I have, one thing I hate is that because its open every carrier messes with it which makes it impssable to have the media intigration that Apple has.

1. I have a lot of data on my iPhone. As a matter of fact, the 32G I have is maxed. Mostly books and pictures.
Will those transfer OK?
If bought from Itunes more than likely no or it will require a fair amount of leg work to convert the media formats.

2. What is the learning curve from the two?
I have no issue going back and forth, though there are some difference for example my Galaxy has a dedicated back key which my iphone does not

3. Do I have to completely change my software to continue my book club, etc.
Don't know. See if your book club has a droid app.

4. Battery life experience?
Depends, I think my Galaxy was better but it does not matter with a galaxy, you can change the battery on it. I have three for when I am on the road for work. I can just swap the battery when it gets low unlike my iphone where I am looking for someplace to plug it in to.
