Is one layer of 24oz cloth with poly resin enough for stingers? or would it be better to do a couple layers of 18oz or something like that? Also, what about the transom? 3 layers of 24oz?

If you mean just a layer of 24oz, then no, you need a layer of mat under it.

But there's no way to tell how much is needed, we need much more info, like what size and style of boat, plus what was there when it was first built.

The stringers on mine will get 1 layer of mat and 1 later of 24oz but that was original construction, and my stringers are built strong even without the fiberglass.

sorry, I should have given more info. Yes, I do mean 1 layer of mat and 1 layer of cloth. The boat is an 18' bayliner capri. Not sure what was originally there, but then again, I probably wouldn't want to do exactly what bayliner did seeing as their stringers and decks failed.

As long as you at least try to keep one eye open and limit yourself to less than two cases of beer on the nights you work on the boat, you should be able to do a better job than they did.

Most of the time one layer of each will work on smaller boats, double it if you want it stronger.

hahaha, that's what I figured too. I'm not a big bayliner fan, even though I own one. Thanks for the advice. I'll probably do two layers then.

Do two and stagger them... place one about 3-4 inches lower or higher than the other, depending on how wide the cloth you're using is. Give it the maximum area to grab onto the hull.

Don't forget to sand and thoroughly clean the areas you're glassing onto with xylene or acetone.

Don't let your new stringers touch your hull... space them off the bottom with foam or some other spacer, or bed them in poly adhesive (PL premium) or filled resin (peanut butter).

Thanks guys. Between oops, erik, and ondarvr, I probably got the best fiberglass advice I could on this site.
