Is 90W Grease OK For My 1968 9.5hp Sportwin Gearcase?

I drained the grease/oil from the gearcase. It looks clean, olive green color and appears waterfree (no foam). It has the consistency of 90W grease/oil. I had to reverse the direction of the clutch dog and need to put it back together tonight for use tomorrow. Obviously nice fresh grease would be preferred but does this lube sound adequate?

80w90 oil is fine. Make sure it's designed for outboard lower units. you should be able to get it at Wal-mart, auto parts stores, etc.... You may also need a little pump for the oil. They usually sell them near by. Here are some reference pics, but there are many brands.

Did you reseal while you have the gearcase opened up?

If someone has grease in there, it is likely due to a faulty seal somewhere, and instead of resealing the PO just used grease.

High...might just be semantics....it's common to refer to 90W as grease..or simply "90 wait" in my neck of the woods
