Is a 1973 25 Horse Johnson Clutch Dog Reversable?

I understand that the service manual describes the proper orientation. The grooved face is supposed to face forward. Is there any reason why it can't be switched? I had two identical parts setting on the bench looking at every angle for a visuall difference and found none.
I'm going for it, this is my last chance to get a reccomendation not to. I will appreciate any feedback from experience with a similar project.

I have reversed the dog on those motors with success. Reverse does not put a big load on the worn side and it will then hold forward gear.

Cutting corners here......not as good as a new dog but will probably get you by.
