Seems high for a 20 yo motor ... that's about 25% of a 2005.

These sell on eBay for about $450 US on a regular basis. There are usually a few on there at any given time. So, it would need to be in extraordinary condition to warrant this price in my opinion. Figure that a 1976 motor will need work to maintain even if running well. If you can do it yourself, these are good motors. Wiring was bad on these, so you may have to contend with replacing crumbling wires. Be advised that the ignition system changed in early 1976, if you need parts.

I live in northern Ontario. I just bought a 1985 Mercury 20 Mint + a 1985 Mercury 25XD Long Shaft (bad switch box) but rest of it is excellent. I got both for $900.00. I then sold the 20hp Short Shaft for $450.00 canadian.

Look around I am sure you can get a better price. if not offer him no more than $600.00.

Another route, go to your local dealer and ask him how much it would be worth on a wholesale to wholesale trade.

Good Luck

Hey guys, thanks a ton. My problem you see is that I have a 1961 Johnson 40 H.P. that runs like crap. I wanted to replace it with something easier on gas and running better. I had no idea that the price was so out to lunch. I will offer him $500 and see if he takes it...thanks for your input and I am very happy with your response...

Last spring I bought a very clean, low hour '74 Merc 200 (20HP) for about $500 on Ebay. It needed nothing, runs great so I have no complaints.
There are many on Ebay, some look clean like mine and some look very rough.
