Is a 250 too big?

Looking at a rebuilder 2001 ficht 250 Evinrude for my 20 foot deck boat that weighs about 2500#. It had a 200 on it and it would go about 40mph tops with 17 pitch prop. 200 is the max rated horsepower for my boat. The 250 is the same weight as the 200 so weight is not an issue, but is the 50 extra ponies going to damage my boat? Are there any issues with doing this? Thank you.

Cliff...look at your e-mail.
I would run the other way from a 2001 Ficht.

I already know this. I am sure many people put engines on that are over the max. I would think those max ratings are conservative for liability purposes. I am only asking what peoples experiences are by going over the max and if they had any issues with this.

Hey Cliff...
Another thought....

Weld up the hole in your #2 crankcase, take the block to a reputable machinist, and have him raise the exhaust port height to 1.70 inches from the cylinder deck surface on all six.

He can freehand it with a grinding stone, following the existing curve of the top of the exhaust port. Must be uniform, and high quality work.

Do the infamous water cooling modification.

Hone it out, bore it if needed, new pistons, and assemble.

Slap a set of 225HP carbs on it and as they say in Texas "Wallah!!!" you now have a carb'ed 250 HP engine.

Basically you have the 225HO stock factory model.

If you have insurance on your boat call your company and see what they say. Also check with your local marine law enforcement.
