Is a Johnson really the same as an Evinrude?

I continue to see posts that state that an older Johnson is the same as an equivalent Evinrude.<br /><br />Is this really true?<br /><br />Is a 9R72 Johnson the exact same motor as a 9222 Evinrude (except for the paint and logo)? <br /><br />If I get a Johnson owner's / service / parts manual will it apply to my Evinrude?<br /><br />Thanks,

Hi cruncher...back in the old days when they run the 5 1/2 and 10's, there was some cosmetic differences like the hood and controls. But the engine was the same.
