I have been offered a Seawater cooled Volvo 350 from a guy who is putting a new one in his boat.

I was just wondering if it was worth my time. My plan was to get the engine, break it down and have it inspected anyway.

I wouldn't touch one with a........well I wouldn't touch one.

Cast iron blocks and heads don't live very long with salt water in them.

He's replacing it for a reason.

Why bother breaking it down?....
Do a compression test & that will tell you if it's worth it.....
I'm assuming from your location salt water use......
Put it in & run it till it croaks....;)

Re: Is a SWC engine worth rebuilding?

I have a 2200+ hour engine in my Albemarle, it is seawater cooled. The one that Im being offered has no problems except a leaking oil pan. Actually mine has no problems at all right now either.

He told me that he would not pull the old motor and put the old one back in. His motor has 1800 hours on it.

My plan was to just get the motor, look it over and possibly rebuild it and have it ready when or if my motor gives out.

I have a pre-86 motor and his is a 1992, will I need a different bell housing? I seem to remember that there is a mating difference between the earlier engines.

Any advice would be great.

Ayuh,...... The Difference is in the Crankshaft Bolt Pattern......

You'll need a different Flywheel,+ possibly a Coupler to match.........
