Re: is a valve cover the same as a cylinder cover?
ok....will get a real manual.
I have no compression at all in the first cylinder. A colleague (with much more engine experience than me) suggested that, instead of giving up and putting the new 4-stroke engine we have in storage on the boat, I first try spraying sea-foam into the faulty cylinder and trying to run the engine for a couple of minutes and repeating that several times.
also he suggests:
(1) remove the valve cover (easy)
(2) take out all plugs
(3) inspect valves for your dead cylinder
(4) run the starter motor and watch the valves to see if they are moving freely
(5) you might have a piece of carbon stuck in the valve or it may need adjustment (valve adjustments are easy and all you need is a feeler gauge which costs a few bucks at most at the auto parts store -- hell for that matter a compression guage only costs around $30
(6) if you can't tell any difference among the cylinders then put the engine in the cycle where the valve should be closed on the exhaust stroke and blow compressed air into it and listen for air coming out and then do the same thing for the intake valve -- these engines are pretty simple and if its a cracked head gasket or head or something else - air will be leaking out in other areas....
(7) if it is then put the new engine on it -- otherwise adjust all the valves and clean the thing with some decarbonizer right in the plug holes and then run sea foam in the gas for the first few boat trips
This all sounds good to me (what do I know?)...but, like I said, I can't find 'valve cover' in my d$%n manual! What manual do you recommend for the Yamaha???
