Is any gas or oil in bilge water normal or not?

Whenever I flip on the bilge pump on my boat the water coming out of the bilge leaves an oily film on the water. It's worse if the boat's been sitting for a few days. The pollution is not much but enough to be noticable if you're looking at the water from the right angle. Maybe equivalent to a tablespoon of oil or gas - definitely less than a little errant slop from a jerry can. I don't know if this is normal or not. I'd strongly prefer the bilge water be clear.

The boat's a month or so old bowrider with a 4.3 I/O Volvo. It'll be going back in for 20hr servicing soon. I'd appreciate knowing what's expected here from folks more experienced than I so I can better set expectations with the dealer.

It is not normal. It is an indication of a problem .
Bring it to the attention of the dealership when you take it in for the 20hr.
It should be repaired at no cost to you.
Monitor your bilge once you get it back. The leakage will only get worse with time if not corrected.

i would take it in now, to register the complaint. they only oil or gas that should be in there is that, that is spilt. if you have a leak, it needs to be fixed now, especially if it is gas. potential bomb.

Just keep in mind you are responsible for any gas or oil discharge from your boat bilge. If you have frisky enforcement officers hanging around the dock, it could be a stiff fine.
