Is corrosion a problem with the Skeg Guard?

I haven't received it yet, but I am starting to have second thoughts about the Skeg Guard. What about corrosion underneath it?

There is no mention of sealant or epoxy in their installation instructions on-line ( Skeggard website ), and I suppose this would hinder the guard from breaking loose if needed.

Is there a drain hole so that any water trapped inside does not remain inside?

Have any of you ever taken a Skeg Guard off again and looked at the skeg underneath? Is corrosion an issue?

They've been around for a very long time (many years) If corrosion was an issue you would know about it (or at least I would). From time to time they come off (as designed) due to a heavy collision and there are no signs of corrosion on the original skeg - It's not unlike what you'd expect from all the other SS components attached to your I/O. Your zincs take care of corrosion for slipped boats.

I've had mine for about 4 or 5 seasons now, boating only in salt and haven't had a problem. It's saved me at least twice from skeg damage when I hit bottom - previous bottomings just like it always broke the skeg.

One guy I know of had a severe impact (hit a rock or something at high speed) When he pulled the boat out the skeggard was gone but his skeg was untouched. He wouldn't put the boat back in the water until he put another skeggard on, that's how much he was sold on it.

You don't use epoxy for the reasons you suggested. They would prevent the shearing fasteners from doing their job at the designed force.

Skeggards are designed to fit like a glove but There is a slight channel designed into the skeggard that allow any water to drain.

Stevens, I think your problem is compounded by the fact you dont have a skeg anymore. The potential damage you could have if you hit something again with out a skeg I think out weighs the corrosion issue. Also, based on above feed back from salt water users this still looks like a good move.
