I have looked at few of the older mercruiser outdrives and have noted the same crack on the cavitation plate on all the units. The crack arcs around the cav plate at the trailing edge of the main body, right above the trim anode. What is the cause of this? I thought it was just my drve(120-140) but have seen it on an 888 and on a 165. Is this something that can be welded?

That's not normal, and yes a guy who has the right equipment, and knows how to use it can weld that.

Someone probably backed the trailer into something at some point, if it doesn't leak oil i wouldn't worry about it too much.

You should drill some small holes at the end of the crack to keep it from splitting any more. Then go get some JB Weld and fill the holes. If you want to the crack could also bw repaired with the JB Weld but you're going to have to cut a " V " into the metal to give it something to grip to. A shot of primer, some Phantom Black spray and you're good to go.
