Is engine alignment after re-install required?

I actually have a Yamaha Stern Drive but I would tend to think my question would just as likely apply to most stern drives setups and this forum has many more participants...

I'm removing my Chevy 305 engine from my boat to replace the flywheel (chipped teeth). Is it mandatory to re-align the engine when reinstalling the engine? From what I can understand, the alignment is performed on the front motor mounts moving the front of the engine higher or lower thus changing the angle of the coupler.

If I haven't touched my motor mounts and I'm using the same physical engine, etc. Is an alignment necessary?

Part of my hesitation is the fact that Yamaha doesn't sell parts any longer and from what I understand you can't really find an alignment tool. I also hear though, that the Mercruiser alignment tool *may* work.

Any insight into this would be appreciated.

yes

doesnt matter, you touched the motor

alignment is supposed to be checked every year along with bellows, gimbal bearing and u-joints

and yes, the universal alignment tool works on Mercruiser, OMC, Volvo, and your defunct Yamaha

all types of engines benefit from proper alignment.., less wear is the most beneficial outcome of proper alignment be it a gas motor, electric, air....etc.
