Great deal on a clean boat, but I have had several comments on the Force outboard having alot of problems. I'm not familiar with Force. Deal is not so hot if motor is inferior or problematic. 1988 85h.p., looks clean, runs nice, brackish water only, mo.#856x8b. serial #: 5383. Appreciate opinions.

Lots of problems with Forces from the 80's. Some problems with Forces from the 90's.
I have one, much newer.

Before I would buy that motor, the price would have to be for the boat only, with the motor thrown in for free, AND it would have to perform flawlessly on an hour long test ride. And it would have to register 110# per cylinder on a compression test. And the tilt and trim had better be in top notch condition.

Do a search here for "85 hp Force". Lots of posts.

Re: Is Force outboard a bucket of worms?

All things are relative, I have a force 125, had a few problems minor mostly my own stupidity, but seems to run fine now.The previous owner had minor issues and normal replacment parts T-stat, Impeller. All brands have problems Force gets bashed alot, but then how many Force motors are hanging on the back of Bayliners, Maxums etc... I read somewhere that for every Boston Whalers sold there were 10,000 Bayliners do the math...Yes resale value for force is low, but if the boat you wanted to buy had a Merc I think the price would be much higher. Force will not keep up with other brands i.e a 125 force will not pull as well as a 125 Rude or Merc but if you are handy with simple repair and do the maintanence well I think getting a cheap motor may be worth it. Read the posts they are great and the help on this board is top notch, I used it to help me. Here is an idea if you still do not want a force buy the boat, part out the force on e-bay use that cash and a C-a-p load of more to hang another windmill of the back. Good luck.
