My 1984 120hp mercruicer dies when put into gear and I was told it was the shift cable. Is it a difficult job changing that, I want to do it myself. Any tricks I should know?
Sorry Bob, But a sticking lower shift cable WILL cause stalling. It causes the shift interupt switch to not work correct.
Replacing the lower shift cable is not really hard if you take your time. Take a look at this... Shift cable replacement
Thanks for the advise. I did get a second opinion, after alot of calling around. It seem like no one wanted to answer me, they all wanted me to bring it them and a few hundred dollars for them to fix it. I bought the cable today and now going to attempt to replace it. I will post an update when done or if I have any questions during replacement (hopefully not).
Well Mr. Plumber i had similar problems a couple of years back.Should be no problem to a guy like you.Took mine to a shop and wished i'd done it!
$480 later and a differnt boat.(other work done as well)
Follow the manual !
Either way if done correctly will benefit you immensly.
Good luck
plumber,
If you do need a shift cable, most shops will advise you that because of the depth of the job (what has to come apart) you also replace the ujoint bellows, exhust bellows, and water hose at the same time.IF needed.
DHP
