is it possible to convert a 7.5 Hp Elgin year 1956 to remote fuel tank?

Hello All,

I was just wondering if it was possible to put a fuel pump on this model of Elgin (two tone green) 1956, and then have it connected to a fuel tank instead of the gravity feed fuel tank that it already has...I am sure it can be done, but has anyone done it? How did you do it? did you have to make some pieces? If so, what did you make them out of? Where did you get a fuel pump for it?

Thanks in advance for your answers,

Patrick

Carbs made for gravity feed may not have a strong enough float valve to deal with fuel pressure.

Early Mercury 7.5s and 9.8s have the smallest external diaphragm fuel pump I've seen. You would need a hose fitting with a small orifice mounted in the crankcase wall to drive it.

Is it possible to change the carb and add a fuel pump to these models?

The carb should work OK with a fuel pump, however you may have to replace the float valve with one with a smaller hole. The basic carb was used on lots of motors with fuel pumps.

Of course, it is possible to convert to a pump system, but it would look kind of crappy and cobbled-up in my humble opinion. A Mikuni pump could be made to work. Or you might want to check into later model West Bend or Chrysler motors of similar horsepower which had pumps to see what they used. I do believe West Bend used the same basic powerhead on some motors with fiberglass hoods. West Bend made your Elgin.

I found this, concerning the West Bend. All the circled parts are needed to make up a complete fuel pump. Certainly would be the best looking way to go.

That is a great pic and really shows me what I need to do in order to get a remote tank operation going on this motor. Thank-you very much for finding this pic and uploading it to here.
