Recently bought a 1996 5.7 Merc. Drive oil reservoir is packed with sludge. I’m wondering if it’s possible to pull the monitor piece under the reservoir off. Going to need to completely flush the reservoir before I move to the drive. Thanks.

Not sure you need to disassemble the switch from the bottle in order to clean it. Just take the reservoir out of its holder and flush it out. You can also flush the line leading to the transom assembly one you have the outdrive off.

Scott, do you flush your whole system with brake cleaner? I have extreme sludge build up from the previous owner throughout the drive. Would a guy be able to pop the vent and drain screws and flush it from the reservoir line? I’ve never had to deal with this much build up before.
