Is it possible to polish bare pot metal or isn't it worth it?

My steering collumn cover on my boat is chromed potmetal.

There is slight pitting on the underneath and I am thinking of filing it off and taking it in to be polished.

Is it possible to polish these potmetal areas or am I wasting time and $$.

Better yet, is there a way to clear coat that area to prevent corrosion without discoloring the metal?

If it is removable then find out about re-chroming it.

Carefully polishing it and clear coat will work but will not look as good as chrome :(
